Current mood:
The rest of our trip in Seoul was a much more positive experience.
We spent Friday and Saturday sightseeing (Gyeongbukdong Palace, a Buddhist temple, different areas of the city), shopping, and being more and more grateful that we live in Busan.
On New Years Eve, we were trying out a few different hofs (bars) in a younger area of town, but we didn't know what was going on at midnight. With an absence of plans and not knowing when the subway stopped running, we decided that it was in our best interest to head back to the area where our hotel was situated. We emerged from the subway around 11:30 to loud sounds and bright lights. We headed towards what had been a busy intersection earlier in the day and saw hundreds of people filling the streets shooting off fireworks. We bought some fireworks from a street vendor and joined in all the fun. When our fireworks ran out, a group of English-speaking foreigners like ourselves handed us another set. It was incredible to see...and for you, my friends in the states, it was just morning on December 31st.
Happy New Year!
